Manderson's Late Goal Earns Nailers Important Point

February 14, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

ELMIRA, NY- Denver Manderson's goal with seven seconds left in regulation earned the Wheeling Nailers a point on Tuesday night, keeping them in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. Unfortunately, Dustin Gazley's tally at the 2:45 mark of overtime gave the Elmira Jackals two points, as they picked up a 3-2 victory over the Nailers at First Arena.

Both teams found the back of the net once in the opening period. Cody Chupp started the scoring for the Nailers at the 13:49 mark of the frame, when he received a long lead pass from Ben Farrer, broke in past the defense, and beat Timo Pielmeier with a wrist shot high over the glove. Ryan Schnell also picked up an assist on Chupp's 14th of the season. 3:30 later, the Jackals tied the game, while playing with the man advantage. Mario Larocque took the puck at the left point, before sliding a pass to Dustin Gazley in the left circle. Gazley rifled a one-timer into the top part of the goal, sending the contest into the first intermission knotted at one.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period, sending a tie game into the third. Midway through the final stanza, Elmira took the lead, thanks to a two-man advantage. The home team worked the puck to the middle of the blueline, where Josh Godfrey scored on a slap shot through traffic. The Jackals maintained that lead until the final seconds of regulation, when a failed clearing attempt resulted in Matt Schepke setting up Denver Manderson for a wrist shot from the left circle. Manderson's third goal in as many games earned his team a point, as the battle went to overtime.

In the extra session, the Jackals came out victorious, as Dustin Gazley slid a shot through at the 2:45 mark.

Timo Pielmeier got the win in goal for Elmira, making 28 saves on 30 shots. Peter Delmas suffered the overtime loss, despite stopping 23 of the 26 shots he faced.

The Nailers and Jackals will do battle again on Friday night at 7:35, with the game taking place at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
