Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Jeff Malm hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading the Bowling Green Hot Rods (41-27, 79-59) to a 5-3 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (37-31, 68-70) at Bowling Green Ballpark on Saturday night. Nick Sawyer hurled two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win in a Hot Rods uniform. Jake Hager also added a solo home run as the Hot Rods broke their three-game slide.
Managing just three hits on the night, two of the three runs were home runs. Hager's solo shot occurred with one out in the bottom of the first inning, placing the Hot Rods into an early lead. Bowling Green did not manage another base hit until a Cameron Seitzer single in the seventh inning.
The TinCaps scored their three runs in the third and fourth innings without a base hit leaving the infield against Hot Rods starter Jake Partridge. On the night, the TinCaps were just 1-14 with runners in scoring position.
The lack of a clutch hit for Fort Wayne ended up costing the TinCaps in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, reliever Cody Hebner walked three straight to load the bases. After a Seitzer pop fly on the infield, Malm sent a no-doubter off the scoreboard in right field to clear the bases and give the Hot Rods the lead.
Sawyer shut the TinCaps down in the top of the ninth inning, and the Hot Rods stayed unbeaten against the TinCaps at home in the 2012 season (4-4).
The final regular-season series continues on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark at 2:05 PM CDT for the middle game of the three-game set with the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Getting the start for Bowling Green is LHP Felipe Rivero (8-8, 3.18). The TinCaps will counter with RHP Colin Rea (5-9, 3.91).
