Clinton LumberKings News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA "" The Clinton LumberKings ran their winning streak to a season-high eight games with a 5-4 win against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field.

Both teams scored in the ninth inning but Clinton survived a last-ditch effort by the Kernels. With the game tied 3-3 heading to the ninth inning, Jharmidy De Jesus riffled a single down the left-field line to start a rally. De Jesus, who finished the night 3 for 4, was lifted for Patrick Brady who entered as a pinch-runner.

Brady moved to second on a passed ball by catcher Zach Wright and then got to third on a balk by Frank De Jiulio. Bryan Brito bounced out to short for the first out in the inning. The next batter, Dillon Hazlett was hit in the head by a De Jiulio slider to put runners at the corners. The right-hander then uncorked a wild pitch that moved Hazlett to second and scored Brady to give Clinton a 4-3 lead. Another wild pitch put Hazlett at third for Jamal Austin who delivered a key insurance run with a line-drive base hit to left field to make it 5-3.

David Colvin, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, came back out for the ninth inning and retired Matt Scioscia for the first out. Kevin Moesquit lined a single up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate for Cedar Rapids. Trevor Hairgrove popped out for the second out in the inning. Eric Stamets hit a slow roller to short that Brito handled and threw to first. Field Umpire Mike Huus ruled Stamets safe on a close play that was contested by LumberKings Manager Eddie Menchaca.

The next batter Drew Martinez lined a base hit to left that Guillermo Pimentel bobbled. Moesquit scored from third and the error allowed Stamets to get to third and Martinez to second. Clinton elected to intentionally walk Zach Borenstein to load the bases for Andy Workman. The Kernels' clean-up hitter lined the first pitch to the start of the warning track before Kevin Rivers hauled it in to end the game.

Mayckol Guaipe started the contest for Clinton but struggled through four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. Stephen Landazuri, pitching for Clinton for the first time since May, came in and delivered three scoreless innings in relief before handing off to Colvin who got the win. De Jiulio was tagged with the loss for the Kernels.

The two teams meet for game two on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Seon-Gi Kim (4-4, 4.31) gets the ball for the LumberKings and left-hander Ryan Crowley (2-6, 3.88) starts for the Kernels. First pitch at Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 2:05.
