Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs built an early three-run lead through the bottom of the order but couldn't hold on in a 6-5 loss to the Kane County Cougars Saturday night to open the final series of the 2012 season. The loss drops the Chiefs to 27-40 in the second half and 62-74 on the season.
The Chiefs fell behind early as Justin Trapp led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off Jeff Antigua. Peoria bounced back in the second to grab the lead against Kellen Moen. Jorge Soler led off with a single and was out at second on a fielder's choice. Jacob Rogers walked to move Chadd Kirst to second and with two down Oliver Zapata doubled home both runners for a 2-1 Chiefs lead.
Kane County evened the game in the third on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Mateo and the Chiefs regained the lead in the fourth. Krist doubled to left with one out and moved to third on a single by Rogers. With two down Zapata drew a walk to load the bases and Bijan Rademacher delivered a three-run double over the head of the Cougars left-fielder for a 5-2 Chiefs lead.
The Cougars scratched one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Kevin David single. With the Chiefs up 5-3, Antigua ran into trouble in the sixth. A leadoff bunt by Alex Llanos and a walk to Juan Aparicio put two on with no outs. After a sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position, the Cougars cut the lead to one with a single by Tim Ferguson. Trapp squeezed home Aparicio with a perfect bunt to tie the game at five and the Cougars pulled off a double steal. After a groundout, Justin Berg replaced Antigua on the mound and a wild pitch scored Ferguson to put Kane County on top 6-5.
The Chiefs had chanced to get even in both the seventh and eighth innings. Rademacher led off the seventh with a single off Rudy Brown and was sacrificed to second by Zeke DeVoss. Rademacher stole third with one out but Pin-Chieh Chen grounded out and Dustin Geiger flew out to end the threat. In the eighth, Krist doubled off Cody Fassold with one out and Rogers drew his second walk of the game. But the Chiefs couldn't get even as Fassold struck out both Wes Darvill and Zapata to end the game. Fassold retired the Chiefs in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Antigua (2-3) allowed six runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in his final appearance of 2012. He walked three and struck out two while also allowing a home run. Berg threw 2 1/3 shutout innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
