Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Lansing reliever Phil Brua hit Leonardo Castillo with the bases loaded in the top of the 13th inning to drive in the game-winning run of the Lansing Lugnuts (34-32, 81-54) 3-2 loss to the Lake County Captains (39-29, 70-67) Saturday night on Jackson Field.
Brua (Loss, 3-1) had tossed a scoreless eleventh and twelfth before allowing a single to Jerrud Sabourin, allowing a double to Jake Lowery and intentionally walking Charlie Valerio to begin the thirteenth. Brua recorded the next three outs to leave the bases loaded and give the Lugnuts a chance in the bottom of the 13th. Captains closer Enosil Tejeda (Save, 8) entered in the bottom of the 13th and retired Lansing in order.
The Lugnuts had their chances late in the ball game but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Four arms out of the Captain's bullpen allowed one inherited runner and were not charged with a run in 7 2/3 innings of work.
Both of Lansing's runs were unearned against Captains starter Mason Radeke who faced the minimum in the first three innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out five, but his throwing error allowed Shane Opitz (1-for-4, 2B) to score and extended the inning for K.C. Hobson's sacrifice fly that tied the game at two in the sixth.
Lake County scored twice against the Lugnuts' starter Justin Nicolino. The lefty tossed five innings, allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one.
Both Aaron Munoz and Dalton Pompey recorded a pair of hits for the Lugnuts.
The Lugnuts' bullpen received great outings from Blake McFarland and Shawn Griffith. McFarland worked two hitless innings before Griffith worked three hitless innings of his own.
Base umpire Ryan Additon ejected leftfielder Bryson Myles for arguing a force play at third base in the top of the 11th.
Additon then handed Captains manager David Wallace a heave-ho for arguing a safe call at second base on a force play in the bottom of the 11th.
The Lugnuts and Captains will play the middle affair of this three-game series on a Kids Day Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Lansing will have Anthony DeSclafani (10-3, 3.36) on the mound. Lake County will counter with lefty Elvis Araujo (4-1, 4.28). Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the Cooley Law School Stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
