Mallards Weekly Update

March 24, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Quad City Mallards News Release

The Mallards lost to the Missouri Mavericks three times in 48 hours last weekend and in so doing matched their longest regulation losing streak of the season. The Mallards have just one win in their last eight games (1-5-2).

The Mallards clinched a playoff spot last Saturday night when the Tulsa Oilers defeated the Wichita Thunder to render ninth place Wichita incapable of catching the Mallards in the standings. The Mallards, who can finish no higher than fifth place, will face one of Missouri, Denver, Allen or Rapid City in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Mallards are in fifth place, one point ahead of sixth place Tulsa and Brampton and two points ahead of eighth place Arizona. The Mallards have a game in hand on each of Tulsa, Brampton and Arizona.

On the Road

The Mallards yesterday started a four-game road trip with a loss that extended their away winless streak to six games. That skid is their longest road winless drought of the season. Yesterday's defeat also dropped their away record below .500 (11-12-7).

Home Sweet Home

The Mallards have just one home game left- next Sunday's regular season finale against Missouri.

Yesterday's game was the Mallards' fifth in seven days and eighth in twelve days. They are also in the midst of a run that sees them play 12 times in the final 19 days of the season and a stretch during which they play 31 games over the final 59 days of the campaign.

Rough Road

The Mallards are also in the midst of a stretch that sees them play 18 of their final 30 games against the top four teams in the CHL- Missouri, Rapid City, Denver and Allen. Wednesday they play a member of that quartet (Allen) for a fourth straight game and for the eighth time in their last nine games.

Last Monday night's shootout defeat in Rapid City left the Mallards 2-7 in the shootout this season and 3-10 in games settled in overtime or the shootout.

Goaltender Ty Rimmer today was named to the CHL all-rookie team in a unanimous vote of the league's coaches.

After picking up an assist yesterday, Mike Stinziani has now produced 11 points (three goals and eight assists) in his last ten games. Gergo Nagy's five-game point scoring streak (1-4-5) ended yesterday while Vladimir Nikiforov's four-game point scoring streak (3-1-4) was also halted yesterday.

Rookie Thomas Frazee last Monday against Rapid City scored for the twentieth time this season, joining Jeff Lee as the second Mallard to reach the 20-goal plateau. Gabriel Levesque became the third Mallard to reach 20 goals when he scored last Saturday against Missouri.

Between the Pipes

Rimmer had started four straight games before Thomas Heemskerk took the reins yesterday. Heemskerk yesterday made 19 saves while suffering a loss that extended his winless streak to nine games (0-8-1). Prior to his current drought Heemskerk had suffered just one regulation loss all season.
