Mallards Strong Pitching Blows Away Bombers

MADISON, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (41-27) rolled over Battle Creek (22-46) 13-0, after taking advantage of the Bombers weak offense. Outstanding pitching by the Mallards guided the team to their 41st win of the season.

The Mallards offense was explosive early in the game.

During the bottom of the second, Madison fed off the Bombers struggling defense. Timo Schau (Southern Wesleyan) and Jordan Stephens (Miami-Ohio) contributed RBI singles, followed by a two RBI single from EJ Ranel (Lenoir-Rhyne), to give Madison a huge jump. Two errors on the Bombers infield and a sacrifice fly by JT Mabry (Middle Tennessee State), finished out the inning with a 7-0 lead for Madison.

After a silent third inning, the Mallards extended their lead by two in the fourth. Nick Gile (Madison College) knocked a two RBI single to put the Mallards on top 9-0.

Through the fifth, the Mallards bats remained lively.

In the bottom of the fifth, Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) ripped a sacrifice fly out to right field to put the Mallards ahead by double-digits. Gile for the second time, hammered a two RBI double to extend the lead 12-0. Every Mallard in the lineup safely reached base by the bottom of the fifth inning.

Chase Gockel (Parkland College) came in for relief to start the sixth inning and had a stellar outing. Gockel pitched through two innings and retired all six batters he faced, earning five strikeouts.

The Mallards bats held no mercy, adding another run during the bottom of the eighth. Bigbie added another RBI single to his resume and drove the Mallards up 13-0.

Battle Creek was unable to make their way onto the scoreboard during the game. Madison claimed the 13-0 victory in their last meeting with the Bombers for the regular season.

The winning pitcher is Daniel Bagwell (Queens University of Charlotte), after he pitched through five innings. This is his first win of the season.

The losing pitcher is Trevor Smisek (Saint Leo), after he gave up seven runs in the bottom of the second.

Top Mallards

Gockel pitched two innings, retiring every batter faced and earned five strikeouts.

Gile contributed two RBI singles twice during the game, driving in four runs.

Matt Morgan (UW-Stevens Point) entered the game during the ninth and retired three in order.

Turning Point

The Mallards had a hefty lead going into the sixth, but Chase Gockel prevented the Bombers from making a dent in the score during his outing. A strong offense, lead by a powerful arm, propelled the Mallards to victory
