Willmar Stingers News Release
MADISON, Wis. - The Stingers began the game with a much-needed bang as the first three batters reached base safely and Marc Flores launched an awe-inspiring grand slam off the face of the scoreboard. Flores' home run set the stage for the high-scoring affair as fellow Stingers Zack Tillery and Michael Suchy followed suit with bombs of their own. In total, Willmar scored seven runs on long balls, but the three runs the Stingers scored in the top of the 5th inning became the difference in the game.
With two out, Colton Bottomley (Florida Gulf Coast) and Kyle Perry (Monmouth) each notched singles and Jake Gronsky doubled to centerfield to give the Stingers an 8-6 lead. Max Dutto (Cal-Berkley) recorded an RBI base hit in the next at-bat.
After a trying bottom of the 3rd inning for Sheldon Lee (San Francisco) and the Stingers' defense, Nick Bates (St. Louis) and Bobby McCormack came into the game and gave Willmar valuable pitching over the middle innings. McCormack (Baylor), in particular, excelled in shutting down the explosive Madison offense. The Mallards came into the contest with a .281 team average, but McCormack, the CDI player of the game, pitched 3.0 innings, continuing his remarkable scoreless streak that dates back to July 4th and spans 13.2 innings and ten appearances.
Cody Hughes recorded the final out of the game to preserve the 10-7 win, recording his second save of the season in the process. Bates, who pitched 2.2 innings, earned his third win of the season.
