Halloran's Blast Leads Honkers Comeback

(Rochester,MN) - Trailing by two runs entering the ninth inning, the Rochester Honkers rallied for three runs to secure a 5-4 win over the Lakeshore Chinooks on Thursday, August 1, at Kapco Park in Mequon, WI.

Aaron Machbitz led off the bottom of the third inning with a single. He advanced to second base on a passed ball and scored on a single from Andrew Stevenson to give the Chinooks a 1-0 lead.

The Honkers answered in the top of the fourth inning as Max Murphy (Bradley) started the inning with a single. He stole second base and came around to score on a RBI single from Tyler Baker (Wichita State) to tie the game at 1-1.

Murphy singled and stole second base again in the top of the sixth inning. He advanced to third base on an error and scored on a RBI groundout from Baker to give Rochester its first lead of the night at 2-1.

Mike Hollenbeck tripled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored on a single from Mike Papi to tie the score at 2-2 after six innings. Lakeshore regained its lead at 4-2 with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

Hayden Edwards (Kansas) kept the deficit at two runs as he entered the game with two runners in scoring position and just one out, but retired both hitters to end the inning.

Kevin Barker (UC Davis) led off the top of the ninth inning with a double. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) followed with a two-run homerun, his third of the season, to tie the game. Mike Friel (Hofstra) reached and advanced to second base on an error. He advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Parker Sullivan (Minnesota State--Mankato,) and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) to take a 5-4 lead.

Edwards earned the win (2-1) for the Honkers, as he retired the only two hitters he faced. Jack Landwehr took the loss (0-1) for the Chinooks as he allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning. Honkers starting pitcher Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Reid Roper (Illinois) earned his second save of the season as he allowed a lead-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning, but recovered to retire the next three batters to end the game. Roper has now tossed 23 scoreless innings in relief this season.

Murphy, Baker, and Hanawahine each collected a pair of hits on the night to lead Rochester's offense.

Rochester (5-20, 23-37) will continue its eight-game road trip on Friday, August 2, at 7:05 p.m at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN. Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) is scheduled to make the start for the Honkers, while John Oltman (Creighton) is slated to make his first start of the season for the Rox. After a pair of games in St. Cloud, the road trip will conclude with a pair of games north of the border in Thunder Bay. The Honkers will return home to Mayo Field on Tuesday August, 6, to begin a six-game home stand that will wrap-up the regular season.
