Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors had a tough night in a 14-2 loss at the hands of the Wisconsin Rapids RaftersWednesday night at Witter Field. The Anchors now have a 9-15 second-half record and a 19-39 mark overall.
It took a while for either team to get going on offense but the Rafters were first to strike against Tyler Beck in the fourth. Jackson Slaid led off the inning with a single and scored on a Robbie Coman double. After the first out was made, Tyler Curtis had back-to-back errors and that's when Wisconsin Rapids loaded it on. With the bases loaded Riley Spetz drew a walk and then two singles and a fielder's choice made the score 5-0.
In the fifth, the Anchors got on the board against Brad Stroik. Andrew Mulato walked with one out and was out on a Keegan Dale fielder's choice. Kris Goodman singled to put runners on the corners and they were both brought home on a double by Georgie Salem cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Rafters erupted again in the sixth against Zac Custer. The first two batters reached base safely and were put in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Then a walk loaded the bases and Donnie Dewees drove in two with a base hit to put the score at 7-2. A wild pitch brought in another run as did a double steal a couple batters later. Then, with two outs, Jeremy Montabano hit a two-run homer to increase Wisconsin Rapids' lead to 11-2.
Taylor Simpson, who finished the sixth inning, walked Cort Brinson to start the seventh and he moved to second on a wild pitch. Derek Peake drove in Brinson with a double and went to third on a single by George Ragsdale. A fly out to left brought Simpson within one out of finishing the inning but Slaide hit a double driving in two and give the Rafters a 14-2 advantage.
Beck (1-6) pitched well but was hurt by errors and finished the evening with 3.2 innings pitched and five runs allowed, one earned, on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. In two innings of work, Custer allowed six runs on three hits and three walks with four punch outs. Simspon threw 1.1 innings and gave up three runs on fours hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Brandon Johnson finished the game throwing one scoreless inning allowing just a walk.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Kris Goodman (3B) - The Iowa infielder was one of the few bright spots for the Anchors in their loss as he had four hits in five plate appearances. He scored one of the two runs and raised his average to .313.
