Mallards Jam out to Win Second Straight
June 5, 2022 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - The Mallards won their second straight on Sunday with an 11-1 victory over the Green Bay Rockers at Capital Credit Union Park.
Madison scored first for the fifth time in seven games in the 1st inning after a Josh Caron (3-5, 3 R) ground-rule double bounced off the hard turf and over the left field wall. Caron came around to score a few pitches later on a wild pitch thrown by Rockers' starter Chris Spry (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K). Caron added to the short lead with a solo blast to left field in the 3rd inning, his third of the season. The catcher from the University of Nebraska and nearby Sun Prairie, Wisconsin almost hit for the cycle on Sunday, coming just a triple shy. The Ducks scored again in the 4th inning from a J.J. Rollon (1-2, 4 BB) walk with the bases loaded.
The Rockers scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 5th against Mallards' starter Dan Wright (6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 8 K) on an RBI single from David Melfi. The 6'9 right-hander from Iowa Western Community College set a new career high in strikeouts with eight. Wright almost lasted through the 7th inning but was pulled after allowing a two-out single for Markell Dixon. Dixon struck out the first four batters that he faced, allowed one walk, and then had three consecutive groundouts to finish the game. Wright improved his season record to 2-0 with his second win in as many starts.
After the Rockers' run, the Mallards unloaded on Green Bay's bullpen. Eight unanswered runs which was capped by a Marcus Brodil solo home run in the top of the 9th inning. Every single Mallard had a hit in the game, totaling 15 combined hits through the nine batters. The three through seven batters in the order all had multi-hit games. Javier Beal improved his hit streak to all seven games with a 7th inning single.
The Mallards rewrite season highs in hits (15), runs (11), and extra base hits (4). Madison will welcome Green Bay to Warner Park tomorrow at 6:08 PM to round out the home-and-home set with the Rockers. Northwoods League coverage can be found on the Madison Mallards website under Live Action.
