Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Kalamazoo, MI - Left-hander Aren Gustafson threw seven scoreless innings as the Traverse City Pit Spitters (2-5) snapped their five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Kalamazoo Growlers.

Run support came right away as Evan Orzech walked to start the game and came around to score on a wild pitch. A couple RBI hits in the third and fourth by Alec Atkinson and Jake Smallwood gave the Pit Spitters a 3-0 lead. That's all Gustafson would need.

"Goose" went seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out five. He allowed his first hit in the fourth inning. He didn't allow more than one baserunner at a time, and he didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base.

After a Cody Hultink sacrifice fly in the eighth, Kalamazoo made it interesting. They loaded the bases in the bottom half but left them loaded. They loaded them again in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Duncan Lutz shut the door, securing the 4-2 win.

Eight of the nine hitters recorded at least one hit in the win. Colin Summerhill (2-4) and Alec Atkinson (3-5) had multi-hit games.

Up Next

The Pit Spitters conclude the series Monday at 11:05 ET. Tuesday is an off day, then they will return home to Turtle Creek Stadium for a six-game home stand starting Wednesday.
