Mallards Headed to Muskegon to Begin Playoffs

Moline, IL – The Mallards finished their regular season with a 39-30-11 record. The team went 3-1-0 in the season's closing week with a pair of wins vs. Flint and a victory over Rockford along with a loss to Fort Wayne. Quad City is in the UHL Playoffs for a 10th consecutive season and will enter the post-season as the eighth seed.

The Mallards closed the season with a 15-6-2 record over their final 23 games. The late season rally allowed the Mallards to clinch a playoff position after being eight points behind the final post-season slot in early February.

The Mallards begin a seven-game first round series with the Muskegon Fury on Friday in Muskegon. These franchises have met in the playoffs for five consecutive seasons and eight times in the Mallards' ten-year history. In the seven previous meetings, the Mallards have won four series.

Wednesday, April 6th-Rockford 2 at Quad City 5

The Mallards beat Rockford 5-2 at The MARK on Wednesday on the strength of a pair of Mike Kompon power-play goals and solo markers from Dave Stewart, A.J. MacLean and Troy Smith. The win, coupled with a Flint shootout loss, clinched a UHL playoff berth for the Mallards. Dave Stewart started the scoring by tallying on a goal mouth scramble just 2:56 into the game. With the goal, Stewart set a new career high for goals in a season with seven. The forward's tally held up as the only goal of the first period as the Mallards carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, Terry Harrison scored for Rockford to tie the game before the Mallards roared back with four unanswered goals. Mike Kompon regained the Mallards lead with his first goal of the night on a power play at the 9:43 mark of the period. Just eight seconds later, A.J. MacLean scored his 12th of the season to extend the Quad City lead to 3-1. Kompon would add another power-play marker at the 13:57 mark of the middle period. Troy Smith scored his seventh goal with just five seconds left in the period to give Quad City a 5-1 lead. Rockford's Reid Simpson scored the only goal of the third to set the final at 5-2. In earning his 24th win of the season, Quad City's Robert Gherson stopped 26 Rockford shots.

Friday, April 8th-Quad City 4 at Flint 3-Shootout

The Mallards beat Flint 4-3 in a shootout on Friday at Perani Arena. With the win, the Mallards moved past Missouri and into the seventh spot in the UHL playoff race. The Generals took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second period. John DiPace scored 58 seconds into the middle frame before Jason Selleke added a power-play goal at the midway point of the period. The Mallards stormed back with two Mike Kompon power-play goals early in the third period. The goals marked the 35th and 36th tallies of Kompon's rookie season. Les Borsheim gave the Mallards the lead for the first time with his third marker of the year at the 8:51 mark of the third. Flint's Leo Thomas scored on a 5-on-3 power play to even the game at three. In the shootout, the teams traded first round goals (A.J. MacLean for the Mallards and Greg Goodnough for the Generals). After three scoreless rounds, Patrick Nadeau scored for the Mallards in the fifth frame. Jeff Reynaert denied J.P. Morin in the bottom of the fifth to secure the Mallards victory. Reynaert made 21 regulation saves before stopping four of five Flint shootout participants to earn his 14th win of the year.

Saturday, April 9th-Fort Wayne 4 at Quad City 2

The Mallards put up a brilliant effort before dropping a 4-2 decision to Fort Wayne at The MARK on Saturday night. The Komets sprung to a 3-0 lead on first period goals by Adam Kostichka, Rob Guinn and Mike Wiggins. Kostichka's marker at 6:55 of the first period was the first of his pro career. Guinn followed with a power-play marker at the 16:38 mark. Wiggins capped Fort Wayne's first period scoring with his second of the season. After a scoreless second frame, the Mallards scored twice in the third to cut the Komets lead to one goal. Andy Fermoyle recorded his fourth goal of the season just 3:59 into the period with helpers from Frantisek Skladany and A.J. MacLean. At the 12:00 mark of the period, Dave Stewart scored shorthanded for his eighth tally of the year. Stewart's shorthanded goal lit a fire under the Mallards that resulted in a furious third period push. But, the Mallards could pull no closer before Jonathan Goodwin scored into an empty net with .1 seconds remaining.

Sunday, April 10th-Flint 3 at Quad City 5

The Mallards closed their regular season schedule with a 5-3 win over Flint on Sunday at The MARK. Mike Kompon recorded his second hat trick of the year in the win. Kompon started the scoring at the 6:38 mark of the period. Drew Otten drew the assist on Kompon's 37th goal of the year and first of the game. Flint's Bobby Reynolds answered Kompon's marker with a shorthanded tally at 14:12 of the opening period. Reynolds' 30th goal of the year tied the game at one. In the second, the Mallards seized control of the game with a pair of goals. Drew Otten scored his seventh of the year 5:58 into the period. Kompon added his second of the game on a power play with just 1:33 left in the period. In the third, Kompon capped his hat trick with his 39th goal of the season to give the Mallards a 4-1 lead. Flint would score twice before the halfway mark of the period to cut the Mallards lead to one goal, but the Generals could pull no closer. Alexander Skorohod sealed the win with his first goal as a pro in North America at 14:55 of the closing period. Jeff Reynaert made 22 saves in the season closing performance to earn his 15th win of the year.

Player of the Week-Mike Kompon is the Mallards nominee for UHL Player of the Week. He recorded three multiple goal games this week including his second pro hat trick. On Wednesday, Kompon scored twice and added an assist in a 5-2 win over Rockford. Friday night, Kompon recorded a pair of goals in the Mallards 4-3 shootout win in Flint. Kompon was held scoreless in the Mallards loss to Fort Wayne on Saturday. He rebounded with a hat trick on Sunday in the Mallards 5-3 win vs. Flint.

Goaltender of the Week-Jeff Reynaert is the Mallards nominee for UHL Goaltender of the Week. He went 2-0-0 this week with a pair of victories vs. the Flint Generals. On Friday in Flint, Reynaert stopped 21 shots and four shootout shooters to earn his 14th win of the year. In Sunday's season finale, Reynaert stopped 22 shots to beat the Generals.
