Madison Mallards News Release
WAUSAU- WIS. - The Madison Mallards finished up their two-game series with the Wisconsin Woodchucks with a strong performance in 10-8 win, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Mallards scored two runs in the top of the first and kept rolling from there. Cam Cratic (Missouri State) and Bryant Shellenbarger (Akron) were both hit-by-pitches and came around to score. The Mallards tacked on one run in the second inning, and two more in the third, to jump out to a 5-2 lead after three.
The big blow came in the fourth inning when Mallards RF Matt Scannell (Princeton) came up after Shellenbarger doubled, and JT Benson (Louisville) walked. Scannell blasted a 1-2 pitch over the right-field fence for a 3-run homerun and an 8-2 Mallards lead.
Michael Fuhrman (San Diego) and Shellenbarger each recorded three-hit performances for the Mallards, with the latter tacking on two doubles, two RBI's and two runs scored.
The Mallards extended their lead to 10-3 midway through seven, but Woodchucks CJ Kayfus laced an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 10-5.
Eliot Turnquist (Madison) started the game for the Mallards and went three innings allowing one run, before manager Donnie Scott turned to the bullpen. Joe Hauser (Arizona State), Ryan O'Hara (Illinois), Jonathan Zacharias (Cornell), Kyle Suburs (Lafayette), Sam Vomhoff (UW-Whitewater) and Kade Lancour (UW-Whitewater) combined to pitch six innings and allow five runs to shut the door and secure the win for the Mallards. Hauser gets credited with his first win of the season and Lancour recorded his second save of the season.
The Woodchucks made it interesting in the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back bases-loaded singles by Griffin Lockwood and Kayfus cutting the lead to 10-8.
With the win, the Mallards move to 8-10 and are on their way home to play the Fond Du Lac Dock Spiders tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. Saturday, at the Duck Pond.
