Mainers use strong pitching to win two in a row

Sanford (2-1) traveled to Laconia to face the Muskrats (0-3) in their second road game in three games played. Jeff Singer (Monmouth University) made his first start for the Mainers and what a start it was, taking a one hitter into the 7th inning. Singer retired the first two batters he faced, Christopher Beall by way of the strikeout and Braxton Martinez by way of a fly out to right field but then Ryan Sullivan broke up Singer's bid at a no-hitter with a single.

It was all about the pitching for the Moose tonight, Singer finished the night allowing just one hit while walking two and hitting one batter along with striking out 6 'rats all while throwing 94 pitches, 61 for strikes. Anthony Ciavarella (Monmouth University) entered in the 8th to complete a two inning save walking two, allowing 1 hit and locking down the Mainers second win in a row!

Sam Balzano (.308) went two for four on the day, same for Sam Dexter and Matthew Pagano's RBI sac fly in the top of the first which scored Balzano proved enough to be the winning run. Mariano Rivera Jr. made his first appearance for the Muskrats delivering all that was built up to be as the Yankees draft pick threw for 6 innings, allowed just 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 7. River finished his day with 104 pitches.

The 'rats threatened in the 8th inning against Ciavarella getting a runner to third for the first time in the gamem Jack Sundberg reached base with a no-out walk, Cornelius Copeland sacrificed bunted Sundberg to second as Mainers third baseman Sam Dexter flashed the leather and a on target missile of a throw to Kendall Patrick at first base. A groundout to short advanced Sundberg to third. Following a walk Matt Byrne ground out to short ending the the threat with 2 runners left on the corners for the Muskrats.

The Moose added an insurance run in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch by Marc Skinner scoring Sam Dexter (.583) to put Laconia away for good. The Maskrats have yet to score a-run 3 games in to the 2014 season. The Mainers finished with 6 hits, earning 4 walks and the top of the order Balzano and Dexter were once again clutch hitting a combined 4 for 8 in the 2-0 win.

The Sanford Mainers host the Vermont Mountaineers inside beautiful Goodall park! First pitch schedule for 6:30 pm and it is also St. Thomas Game Day- Sanford's Pop-Up Science Art and Technology Museum. For those who can't make it to the game, you can always watch and listen on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
