NECBL New England Collegiate Baseball League

Plymouth's Guglietti, Vermont's Davis Named NECBL Player/Pitcher of the Week

June 9, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) is pleased to announce the winners of its first 2014 Player/Pitcher of the Week Awards: Plymouth infielder Vincent Guglietti and Vermont southpaw Ryan Davis, as unveiled by the league Monday morning.

With the 2014 season officially beginning last Thursday, the duo were limited in terms of sample size, but what they did in that span truly stood above the rest of the league to garner the first weekly league recognition of the summer.

Guglietti, a rising senior at Quinnipiac, kicked off the summer on an absolutely torrid pace; the East Haven, Conn., native finished the week 5-for-9 at the plate and ranks third in the league in batting average (.556). More impressively, though, were his power numbers; Guglietti smashed three home runs and drove seven runs while scoring five runs and totaling 14 bases, all of which rank at the top of the league. His three extra-base hits and 1.556 slugging percentage are also tops in the NECBL.

Most of those numbers could be attributed to his insane performance in an Opening Day win against New Bedford on June 6; Guglietti opened the year with a 4-for-5 showing that included two homers, six RBI and three runs scored before adding another solo shot a day later in a victory against Mystic.

On the mound, Davis was up against a stellar cast of hurlers over the league's first four days of action, but the southpaw's league-best eight strikeouts in his season-opening win stood out. The rising junior at Le Moyne tossed six shutout innings against Laconia on June 6, fanning the aforementioned eight while yielding just a walk and three hits against 23 batters.

Davis ranks tied-for-first in the league with a 0.00 ERA, one of 20 pitchers who have seen action and not allowed an earned run. His opponents average against stands at 0.136 while his WHIP is an impressive 0.67.
