Gulls Defeat Wareham in Annual Exhibition, 10-3

NEWPORT, R.I. - In the fourth meeting between the two teams, the Newport Gulls and the Wareham Gatemen (Cape Cod Baseball League) battled each other in an exhibition contest in Newport Sunday night. In front of 317 fans at Cardines Field, the Gulls won their second straight contest against the Gatemen, 10-3, in an annual series dating back to 2011.
Gulls starting pitcher Anthony Misiewicz was one of the major reasons for the Gulls' success against the Gatemen. In his first start with the Gulls, the southpaw went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine batters. Misiewicz's pitching kept the Gatemen offense at bay, giving the Gulls opportunities to score runs against the Gatemen pitching staff.
For the third time in the last four games, the Gulls were the first team on the scoreboard, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With Shea Donlin and Reed Gamache reaching to lead off the game, outfielder Tanner Donnels hit his first home run of the summer, lofting a shot over the right field fence. Even though the Gulls got the bases loaded later in the inning, the Wareham pitching staff managed to escape the jam without further damage. However, when the dust settled, the Gulls led the Gatemen, 3-0.
The Gulls expanded their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when A.J. Zarozny drove in P.J. Jones with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Donlin ultimately drove in Zarozny with an RBI single, helping the Gulls take a 5-1 lead over Wareham.
In the fifth inning, the Gulls used their offensive efficiency to drive in more runs. Zarozny drove in his second run of the game, driving in Colby Wright with an RBI ground out. The Gulls also scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, when Nick Zammarelli drove in Donlin and Donnels with a two-run double, giving the Gulls an advantageous 10-2 lead. The Gatemen got a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Gulls reliever Eric Stone was able to close out the Gatemen with three innings of solid relief, giving the Gulls a 10-3 victory.
With the victory, the Gulls improve their all-time record to 3-1 against the Wareham Gatemen. Newport won the installations of the contest in 2011, 2013, and now 2014. This was also the first time the Gulls won a meeting against the Gatemen at Cardines Field; Wareham's lone victory against the Gulls came in 2012 versus the Gulls.
Newport will continue its NECBL regular season schedule against the Plymouth Pilgrims on Monday night at 6:35 pm. Mike Mancuso will make his first start for the Gulls, while Plymouth sends 2013 NECBL All-Star Kurt Sowa to the mound. Gates open at 5 p.m., while first pitch takes place at 6:35.
