Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Sanford, Maine - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Sanford Mainers 1-0 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play on Monday night. With the win, the Mountaineers move to 2-0 on the season.
For the second time in three games, the Mountaineers pitching was the story of the game. Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) started and went seven strong innings. The right-hander gave up no runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out two and forced the Mainers to hit into three double plays. Ashbeck earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the summer.
The Vermont pitching staff kept Sanford off the base paths for most of the night, until the Mountaineers ran into trouble in the eighth. Nick Kevlin (MidAmerica Nazarene) came on in relief of Ashbeck to start the inning. Kevlin walked the bases loaded with two outs before Jared Gesell (UNC-Wilmington) entered to record the final out of the inning. He then set Sanford down in the ninth to grab a four out save, his second of the season, and secure the win.
Ben Wessel (Rhode Island) pitched well for the Mainers, but made one mistake. With two outs in the third inning and no one on, Alex Caruso (St. John's) reached on a bunt single and stole second. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) followed with the hit of the game, a single to right center, to score Caruso from second and give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. That was all the offense Vermont would need. Wessel took the loss (0-1) after throwing eight innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits, no walks and struck out one.
The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday night when they host the North Adams SteepleCats for an NECBL contest at Recreation Field. The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
