Sanford Mainers News Release

MONTPELIER, V.T. - Seven runs and 15 hits later, the Sanford Mainers (20-14) finally had an extra-inning victory in hand, at the hands of the Vermont Mountaineers (14-17).

Sanford scored the difference maker when Zach Jancarski (Maryland) crossed the plate on a Jordan Powell (Rhode Island) single in the 11th. Jancarski reached base on an error committed by Vermont third baseman Jeremy McCuin (Arizona State), advancing to third on a Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) single.

Sanford only led for brief snippets of the game, at the beginning and later in the 7th. Down 5-3 in the 7th, Jancarski reached base on a dropped third strike, and Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) singled to put two aboard. After two strike outs, Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) blasted a three-run home run to right field, his fourth of the season to put Sanford on top 6-5.

Vermont starter Joe Rocchietti (Manhattan) was solid in five innings of work, allowing two runs, two earned on 10 hits, no walks and three strike outs. Sean Callahan (Massachusetts Dartmouth) took the loss in long relief for the Mountaineers, allowing just a single run in four innings of work.

Sanford's Joe Orlando (Binghamton) earned the win in three-and-two-thirds innings of work, as he allowed one hit, one run, one earned, four walks and two strike outs. Dalton Curtis (Lipscomb) earned his second save in as many days, his fourth of the season.

The middle of the Sanford order carried the offense in Montpelier, with Mompierre going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a walk and Powell going 3-for-6 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Gaetano had the aforementioned home run, finishing 2-for-5 on the evening. With the win, the Mainers now hold a two game lead in the NECBL Northern Division.

The Mainers return to Vermont July 21, traveling to White River Junction to face the Upper Valley Nighthawks. First pitch is at 6:30 PM, with pregame action beginning at 6:15 on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford, 1220 AM and 102.3 FM. The Mainers are 1-2 against the Nighthawks this season.
