Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD - A good collective pitching effort from the Sanford Mainers (19-14) silenced the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (15-17) bats Tuesday night in a 3-0 contest.

Mainers Ben Wessel (Rhode Island), Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) and Dalton Curtis (Lipscomb) led the charge for the Sanford pitching staff. Wessel got the start, going three innings, allowing three hits and a walk with three strike outs. Whitman came in for Wessel, going four innings and allowing two hits and a walk in addition to three strike outs as well. Whitman earned the win, and Curtis earned the save in his 9th inning appearance, his third save of the season.

The Mainers scored in the 2nd inning when Jordan Powell (Rhode Island) knocked in Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) on a groundout to shortstop to make it 1-0. Landestoy reached on catcher's interference, and then went from first to third on a throwing error from Winnipesaukee starter Andrew Politi (Seton Hall).

Powell and Landestoy would add another run in the 6th on back-to-back doubles, as Powell knocked in Landestoy to make it 2-0. Sanford grabbed insurance in the 8th when Zach Jancarski (Maryland) doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a Powell single.

Powell was easily the Mainers offensive star of the night, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Sanford used his clutch hitting, and two Winnipesaukee errors to complete the victory.

The Mainers only had to put out one major threat in the entire ballgame, a bases loaded threat in the in the 6th inning with no one away, which Whitman was able to work out of unscathed. With the win, Sanford maintains their lead of the NECBL North, extending their lead to 1.5 games over the Valley Blue Sox.

The Mainers head out to Montpelier, Vermont on July 20 to the face the Vermont Mountaineers for the third time this season at Montpelier Recreation Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with pregame activities beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network, The Legends in Sanford 1220 AM and 102.3 FM and CBS Sports 1240 WSKI at 6:20 PM.
