Mystic 4, Plymouth 3
The Pilgrims would strike first as they would score 3 runs in the first two innings, a run in the first and two in the second. Tyler Kirkpatrick led off the game with a double and would score on a single by Jesse Baker in the first inning.
They would pick up two more runs in the second off a bloop single by Damon Haecker which would squirt under the glove of center fielder Toby Handley allowing both Chase Bushor and Liam O'Regan to score.
The Schooners would finally push two runs across in the 4th inning, with two outs. A Toby Handley single to left field would score Scotty Bradley and Taishi Terashima would advance to third. Terashima would score during the next at-bat on a wild pitch cutting the Pilgrims lead to one run.
With the Schooners down only one run, it looked like they were going to easily tie up the ball game with five innings remaining. Even though they have the best offense in the NECBL they were unable to do so as they would strand runners in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings.
They would leave themselves three outs to make something happen if they wanted to extend the game. Nick Mascelli led off the bottom of the 9th with a single and would advance to second on a passed ball. He would score to tie the ball game off a Rich Slenker single. The Schooners had the winning run sitting on third base but they were unable to get him home and the game would go into extra innings.
The Schooners would strand a man in each the 10th and 11th innings. Ultimately they would score in the bottom of the 12th. Casey Baker led off with a single and advanced to second on a Brett Bond sacrifice bunt. Toby Handley ripped a single up the middle allowing Baker to reach third but would have to remain there as the ball was not deep enough in the outfield. Nick Mascelli stepped in and hit a ground ball on the first pitch he saw right between the shortstop and third baseman for the game-winning hit, scoring Baker.
Mascelli was the player of the game has he reached base every time at bat. He went 3 for 4 with 3 singles, 3 walks, 1 RBI and a run. Taishi Terashima and Ryan Ramiz defensively were also great as they gunned down three Pilgrims on the night. Terashima gunned down Wagoner trying to score from second in the 3rd inning. Ramiz saved a run in the 12th inning by throwing out Cole Gordon who was trying to advance home.
The Schooners improve to 21-12 on the season and remain in the first place in the Southern Division by 2.5 games over the Newport Gulls. They will be back in action Wednesday versus the Keene Swamp Bats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30PM at Alumni Field.
