July 20, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release
With great offense, pitching, and defense, the North Adams SteepleCats defeated the Vermont Mountaineers 7-2 at Montpelier Recreation Field Tuesday night. The victory moved the SteepleCats to 17-16 on the season and sole possession of third place in the Northern Division.
Peter Lannoo went six innings and allowed one run off of seven hits. All seven hits he gave up were singles. He struck out two and did not allow any walks. Behind him, the 'Cats defense threw out Joe Tietjen trying to steal, turned an inning ending double play, and doubled off Daniel Little after a catch in right field.
"After two off days you never know what you are going to get shaking the rust off from not playing for a couple days," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong. "Pete's start was very important to that. Him going out and setting the tone of throwing a lot of strikes, he was pounding the strike zone, he was making them put the ball in play and our defense was up to the task tonight. That was hugely important after two off days."
Edward Haus came to bat for the SteepleCats to lead off the second. He hit Mountaineer starter Jonathan Stiever's first pitch for a double. He advanced to third on a single by C.J. Price and then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Easton Johnson to put the 'Cats up 1-0.
"I knew he was going to come at me fastball," said Haus. "I was going to be aggressive as can be and luckily got my pitch and got a hold of one into right center."
He recorded his second hit of the game on a single with one out in the fourth. Noah Vaughan doubled him to third. Johnson then hit another single scoring both runners for his second and third RBIs of the game making it 3-0 'Cats.
Stiever finished the night going five innings and giving up four runs off of seven hits and struck out three. Kevin Kernan came on in relief to begin the sixth. At first, he was able to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance pitching three shutout innings. In the ninth, the 'Cats were able to figure him out and add three insurance runs to take a 7-1 lead.
Up next for the 'Cats will be their second doubleheader in five days with a matchup with the Valley Blue Sox Wednesday night in Holyoke.
"It definitely helps having set the right tone," said Haus. "We want to go into Valley tomorrow and keep it rolling.
