
Mountaineers Fall to Sanford, 7-6 in Extras

MONTPELIER, Vt.- The Sanford Mainers got a go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh inning, to top the Vermont Mountaineers 7-6 in an extra-inning New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) thriller.
Designated hitter Jordan Powell (Kingwood, Texas/Rhode Island) knocked an RBI single with one out in the eleventh, driving in Zach Jancarski (East Norriton, Pa./Maryland), to lead Sanford to the victory.
The Mainers got their offense going in the top of the first when Nelson Mompierre (Miami, FL/Miami Dade College Kendall) knocked an RBI single, driving in Zach Jancarski from third.
Sanford got one more in the third when Michael Young (Chester, N.J./UMass Lowell) hit an RBI single to drive in Jordan Powell.
The Mainers struck again in the sixth when John Cresto (Encinitas, Calif./Santa Clara) slapped an RBI double, to drive in Young from first.
Sanford then got three runs in the seventh when Chris Gaetano (Spring Brook Twp., Pa./Monmouth) launched a three run home run. The homer gave the Mainers a one-run lead.
The Mountaineers then tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jeremy McCuin (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona St.) was hit by a pitch and he came around to score.
That sent the game to extra innings, when Powell won it.
The Mountaineers also got run in the first, fourth, and fifth.
Center fielder Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) walked and scored on an RBI single by Mike Oskinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood) in the first.
Vermont then struck for three runs in the fourth when Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook) was walked with the bases loaded to score a run, and Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri) knocked a two-run single.
Catcher Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon) hit a sac fly to score Osinski in the fifth.
Vermont's Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt./UMass Dartmouth) suffered the loss after going four innings, and allowing one run (none earned) on two hits.
Joe Orlando (Endicott, N.Y./Binghamton) got the win for the Mainers after throwing three innings, allowing one run on one hit. Orlando walked four and struck out two. Dalton Curtis (Maryville, Tenn./Lipscomb) picked up the save.
The Mountaineers fall to 14-17. Vermont will be in action again on Thursday when they'll travel to Plymouth to take on the Pilgrims in a doubleheader. First pitch in the first game is set for 4:30 PM, with the second getting underway at 6:30. The games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
