Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls continued to struggle against the New Bedford Bay Sox this week as the Bay Sox defeated Newport 12-1 in the midweek matchup at Cardines Field on Wednesday night, in front of 2,581 fans.
The Gulls (20-16) were unable to solve the Bay Sox pitching staff for the second straight game, after dropping a 1-0 makeup contest at Paul Walsh Field on Monday. Newport mustered four hits throughout the game and produced its only one run in the seventh inning.
Trey Harris recorded the first hit off New Bedford's Jake Stearns in the fourth, a double, after Stearns retired the first nine batters he faced. Troy Dixon followed with a single right in front of the centerfielder; the flight of Dixon's single gave the perception that it was going to be caught, and therefore was unable to advance Harris off second.
The Gulls home run and RBI leader, Stephen Scott, delivered an RBI double in the seventh, scoring Chris Chatfield. Chatfield came on as a pinch runner for Charlie Carpenter after his broken-bat, infield single.
Matthew Murphy was called to the mound and successfully stopped the Bay Sox's offensive onslaught. Murphy struck-out eight New Bedford hitters in 3 1/3 innings pitched, while allowing just one run on four hits.
Andrew Penner, going 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and two RBI, led the Bay Sox. Ryan Wolfsberg also provided much needed run production after going 2-for-6 with three RBI, and finished the game with a .384 batting average on the season.
The Gulls will take advantage of their scheduled day off on Thursday before returning to Cardines Field on Friday, July 22 to welcome the Vermont Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and gates open at 5 p.m. for Mark Weed Memorial Scholarship Night, as the Gulls honor the memory of the late Mark Weed, along with the countless contributions made in his name to fund the Gulls summer camp program.
