Sanford Mainers News Release

The 2013 NECBL season is in its final weeks and the Mainers found themselves four games out of a playoff spot after going on a three game losing streak. On Thursday night the Moose hosted the Ocean State Waves and with a late season pick-me-up from a couple of new additions to the roster, the Mainers were able to edge the Waves 3-2.

As the season series has shown, both teams featured strong pitching in Thursday's game. David D'Errico got the start for the Mainers. He only lasted four innings, gave up five hits and two runs, all in which came in one inning. He was able to strike out four during his outing.

Waves' starter Liam O'Sullivan pitched five innings, gave up seven hits, but only allowed three runs, two which were earned and struck out four.

The Waves got on the board early in the second inning when Christian Muscarello and Dalton DiNatale both doubled with one out with Muscarello scoring on DiNatale's two-bagger. D'Errico got Walker Moses to strike out, but then gave up a single to Reed Gamache and a double to Evan Ocello allowing DiNatale to score.

It was just an inning and a half later that the Mainers answered when new comer Daniel Nevares out of Binghamton University hit a two-run home run down the right field line in to tie the game up at two.

Another inning later, the Mainers took the lead when Billy Bereszniewicz, who also joined the team on Thursday, drew a two-out walk. Troy Black put down a bunt single, but was able to go all the way to third when Waves' catcher Pat Quinn over threw first base. Bereszniewicz scored on the play.

Waves had a chance to tie in the seventh when reliever Stephen Fortuna gave up a double to Ocello and a walk to Caden Bailey with two outs. Steven Rice came into the game and struck out Mike Gerber to end the inning.

It was smooth sailing from there for Rice as he pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and then ended another Waves threat in the ninth by serving up a 4-3 double play off the bat of Ocello.

The Mainers end their three game losing streak and will head into Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, New Hampshire on Friday with a hopeful new turn to the season. Conor Krauss is expected to get the start with game time being at 6:30pm.
