New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The Bay Sox continued to battle from behind in a seesaw game Thursday night at Paul Walsh Field, but lost to the Saratoga Brigade 6-5 in extra innings.

The Bay Sox won the first of two scheduled seven-inning games earlier in the day.

Saratoga scored the game-winning run in the top of the 8th when Brian Taylor (North Carolina St.) singled to score Brian O'Keefe (St. Joseph's). O'Keefe reached on a throwing error by Bay Sox shortstop Lane Richards (Notre Dame) to leadoff the inning.

The Bay Sox had the tying run thrown out at home in the bottom of the 8th.

The Bay Sox were down 5-3, and down to their final three outs going into the bottom of the 7th when a hard hit ball of the bat of Chris Shaw (Boston College) was misplayed by Saratoga's shortstop Craig McConaughy (Oklahoma State). The error allowed Carl Anderson (Bryant) and Lane Richards (Notre Dame) to score and tie the game.

Saratoga took the lead back in the 7th scoring three runs.

Saratoga's Gage Green (Oklahoma St.) scored Taylor with a base hit to make it 3-3. After the second out of the inning, Zach Looney (Santa Clara) sent the go-ahead run across the plate with a liner to left field. Saratoga's Matt Beaty (Belmont) kept the damage coming with a base hit down the right field line to make it 5-3.

The Bay Sox were down 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth when they managed three runs off the Brigade's pitching staff.

Richards and Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) started the inning with base hits, and Shaw walked to load the bases. Max Nogay (West Virginia) tied the game at two apiece with a liner to center field. Two batters later, Alex Witkus (Fairfield) gave the Bay Sox the lead with a bloop-single to left field making the score 3-2 Bay Sox after six.

New Bedford's starting pitcher John Paul Joseph Lieske (Heartland CC) ran into trouble in the 2nd inning when he hit O'Keefe and Jo-El Bennett (Troy U) to load the bases with no outs. Saratoga capitalized on the opportunity with an infield hit from McConaughy and a fielder's choice from Carl Aguirre (USC) gave Saratoga the 2-0 lead.

The Bay Sox scored their first run in the 4th inning thanks to the bats of Plourde and Shaw. Plourde got the inning started with a base hit to left field, and Shaw followed with a double to the left-field gap, making the score 2-1 Saratoga.

The Bay Sox move to 12-20 on the season and travel to Vermont tomorrow night.
