Sanford Mainers News Release
A fantastic night at Goodall Park was set forth with a spirited ceremony to honor our veterans and enlisted soldiers in our armed forces. The Patriot Riders drove onto the warning track and began what would be a memorable ceremony. American Veterans representing the Army, Air-Force, Marines and Navy were welcomed through a tunnel of Mainers players on to the diamond as this was their night to be honored by the town that respects them and loves them. It certainly set the stage for an outstanding baseball game!
The Mainers (12-8) jumped on top of the Danbury Westerners (5-16) in the bottom of the second inning, Matt Harris works a one out walk, Dan Hetzel follows that up with a free pass as well putting runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Matt Harris swipes 3rd base and that's followed closely by another walk to Mike Rescigno to load the bases, with two outs after Drake Parker strikes out, Matt Harris brings home the first run on a wild pitch from starter Alex Katz (0-2, 4.69 ERA), the walk party did not stop there, Matt Pagano worked a walk to re-load the bases with Nick Lovullo coming up, Lovullo grounded to first but A.J. Ryan had trouble fielding the ball for an error allowing Dan Hetzel to score and it was 2-0 Mainers just like that. Alex Katz threw 3 innings for Danbury allowing just 1 hit and surrendering 2 runs 1 of them earned while walking 6 batters with 3 strikeouts.
Nick Poore (1-0, 1.22 ERA) silenced the slumping Westerners through 6 innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 run with 3 strikeouts, his second solid performance in the last 8 days. Kendall Patrick was drilled by another pitch in the bottom of the 4th inning, moving his hit-by-pitch counter to 9 on the season which leads the NECBL.
The Mainers added to their lead bringing 4 more across in the bottom of the 4th against new pitcher Levi Mintz, it started in a familiar way with a leadoff walk to Mike Rescigno, Drake Parker bunt singled his way on as Resicgno advanced to 2nd. Nick Lovullo grounded out to the first baseman who tossed it to Mintz to record the second out of the inning, on the play Rescigno advanced to 3rd and Lovullo to 2nd. Cory Raley earned a two out walk loading the bases once again; all-in-all the Westerners pitching staff walked 10 Moose batters, a pass ball started the windmill as Rescigno scored and Stevie Berman came up clutch once again with runners in scoring position driving a 2 RBI double to left center field. Parker, and Raley score to make it a 6-0 score.
The top three hitters in the Mainers batting order did not get a hit tonight, but they all reached base via the walk. Raley in the 4 spot finished 1 for 4 with a walk, Stevie Berman delivered just that one big hit during a 1 for 5 night, Matt Harris started at first but received one at-bat which he drove in a run and Drake Parker had an outstanding day going 3 for 4 moving his batting average to .302 on the season.
The Mainers secure the win 6-4 despite the bullpen surrendering 3 runs to make it a pressure packed finish with the tying run on 1st base as Cam Hatch closes his 3rd save of the season by fanning Vimael Machin, Hatch's only strikeout against the one batter he faced.
The Moose are on the loose as they run their win streak to 4 games and now sit just a half-game back of first place Vermont with the Mountaineers losing 3-2 to Keene tonight. Sanford has the next two days off and get back at-it in Holyoke, Massachusetts against the Valley Blue Sox (6-12) on July 4 th!
