Keene, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) game to the Keene Swamp Bats, 3-2, at Alumni Field on Tuesday night. With the loss, Vermont falls to 12-7 on the season. With the loss and the Sanford Mainers win, the Mountaineers lead in the Northern Division has dwindled to just one half game.

The contest was tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning, when the Swamp Bats scored the go ahead run to come away with the victory. Vermont reliever Cameron Sorgie (Albany) hit Keene catcher Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut State) with the first pitch of the inning. The next batter, Zach Lauricella (St. John's) laid down a sacrifice bun to move Fitzsimons into scoring position, but the throw from Mountaineers third baseman, Blake Tiberi (Louisville) hit a combination of first baseman Mike Vigliarolo's (St. Louis) glove and the back of Lauricella's helmet, allowing Fitzsimons to move to second and Lauricella to reach. The next hitter, Ryan Summers (Louisville) grounded out to Sorgie moving the runners to second and third with one out. Vermont's plan was to put designated hitter Alex Liquori (Kennesaw State) aboard with an intentional walk, but Sorgie's first wide pitch got by catcher Trey West (Le Moyne), allowing Fitzsimons to score the go ahead run.

Keene scored the first two runs of the game in the fourth inning. Liquori hit a two RBI single to score Lauricella and Summers. All of the damage was done with no outs.

Vermont answered back with a run in the seventh and one in the eighth. Tiberi hit his first long ball of the season to lead off the seventh and make it a 2-1 game.

Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) hit a pinch-hit single to lead off the eighth and stole second. Two batters later, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) hit an RBI single to right to score Parenty and knot the game at two.

Neither starter received a decision. Daniel Koger (Alabama-Huntsville) went six innings for the Mountaineers and gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out one.

Dominic Severino (Central Connecticut State) went seven innings for the Swamp Bats. He gave up one earned one on four hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Matthew Clancy (St. John's) got the win for Keene to move to 2-0 on the summer. Clancy went an inning and one-third, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out three.

Cameron Sorgie (Albany) took the loss and is now 0-1 on the season. Sorgie dealt two innings of relief and allowed one earned run. He didn't give up a hit or walk.

The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday night when they take on the Mystic Schooners in NECBL play at Recreation Field. Baseball legend Jim Kaat will be in attendance and will throw out the first pitch. The National Life Group and the Times Argus sponsor the game. Children ages 12 and under will be given free admission to the ballpark. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
