Mahoning Valley Defeats West Virginia 4-3

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - Black Bears' 3B Will Craig extended his hitting streak to 11 games but Mahoning Valley defeated West Virginia 4-3 on Wednesday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. West Virginia left 10 runners on base in the contest.

Mahoning Valley took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on 1B Nathan Winfrey's RBI single and an RBI groundout from SS Alexis Pantoja. But, the Black Bears would respond in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run from C Kevin Krause to cut West Virginia's deficit it half, 2-1. The long ball was Krause's third of the year and second in the past three games.

Black Bears' starter RHP Matt Anderson received a no-decision tossing two innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits. Reliever RHP Luis Escobar entered in the third and took the loss, fanning five hitters over five innings while surrendering just two earned runs.

Two innings later, 1B Albert Baur's RBI double tied the game 2-2. In the top of the fifth, the Scrappers would jump ahead of West Virginia as CF Gabriel Mejia lined a two RBI single to give Mahoning Valley a 4-2 advantage. The Black Bears would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth on DH Kevin Mahala's RBI walk to cut the score to 4-3.

Scrappers' starter RHP Juan Hillman improved to 3-1 tossing five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while reliever LHP Ryan Perez recorded the save throwing the final 1.1 innings scoreless.

In the game, West Virginia outhit Mahoning Valley 7-5 and were led by LF Hunter Owen who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. For the Scrappers, 3B Erlin Cerda paced the attack going 2-for-4.

West Virginia (20-24) and Mahoning Valley (19-24) will square off in game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Superhero Night.
