Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - A dominating pitching performance by Brooklyn starter Harol Gonzalez, and one swing of a Cyclones bat proved to be the difference as Brooklyn defeated Hudson Valley 3-0 Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium in the first game of a three-game series between the two clubs.
Brooklyn started the scoring off of struggling starter Eduard Rosillo of the Renegades. After a leadoff single and one out walk, first baseman Pete Alonso launched a three-run homerun over the left-centerfield wall to give Brooklyn a 3-0 lead. It was Alonso's fourth homer of the season, and his second at Dutchess Stadium.
That was all the starter Gonzalez (4-1) needed as the right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings to pick up the win. The New York-Penn League's strikeout leader fanned four hitters on four hits while the Renegades left five men on base.
Rosillo (1-1) suffered the loss for Hudson Valley after he allowed all three runs on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. He also struck out five and walked five. The loss overshadowed a fine relief appearance by Jayson McKinley as the right-hander allowed only one hit in 4.1 innings of work and retired 12 of the 13 men he faced while striking out two.
Reliever Gary Cornish picked up his first save of the season for Brooklyn as he tossed two hitless innings and struck out three.
Each team had only four hits with no one registering more than one. Seven of the eight combined hits were singles to go with the homer by Alonso. The Renegades were 0-5 with runners in scoring position.
Hudson Valley continues its series with Brooklyn on Thursday beginning at 7:05. Southpaw Brock Burke (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Renegades against righty Merandy Gonzalez (3-2, 3.80 ERA). For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
