
State College Takes Series Opener from Auburn

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, reached double-digit hits but lost to the State College Spikes, 8-3, on Wednesday evening. Doubledays outfielder Nick Banks collected two hits and two RBIs in the loss.
State College (31-14) scored first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Andy Young singled. Vince Jackson followed with a doubled to right field that scored Young to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead.
Auburn (19-26) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Tres Barrera and Ryan Ripken both singled to put runners on first and second base. Paul Panaccione followed with a base hit that scored Barrera to tie the game at one.
The Spikes scored seven runs combined over the last four innings of the contest to break the game open. State College scored two runs in the sixth inning, one run in the seventh inning, and two runs each in both the eighth and ninth innings. Jackson knocked in four runs for the Spikes in the game.
The Doubledays added their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs, Jack Sundberg and Sheldon Neuse singled to put runners on first and second. Nick Banks then hit a two-run double that one-hopped off the left-field wall.
Auburn and State College meet on Thursday night for the second game of a three-game series. Right-hander Weston Davis will pitch for the Doubledays against Spikes right-hander Bryan Dobzanski.
