State College Spikes News Release
AUBURN, NY - Steven Farinaro delivered 7 2/3 innings of quality mound work, and Vince Jackson drove in four runs with a three-hit night as the State College Spikes took an 8-3 decision from the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday night at Falcon Park.
The win also allowed the Spikes (31-14) to increase their New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead to four games after second-place Williamsport fell to Staten Island.
Farinaro (6-0) took down his league-leading sixth victory of the year after scattering nine hits over his time on the mound. The right-hander was charged with three runs, with two coming after he left the mound. Farinaro also recorded three strikeouts on the night.
Jackson took the Spikes' team lead for runs batted in with his performance, which included two doubles. The Tennessee product now has 27 RBI on the season, and added an outstanding diving catch in center field in the fifth inning to rob Blake Perkins of a base hit.
Each of the first three State College runs came courtesy of Jackson, who doubled in Andy Young in the first. The 2016 14th-round draft choice of the Cardinals then broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the sixth.
The Spikes added a run in the seventh on Danny Martin's RBI single, then plated runs on back-to-back singles from Elier Rodriguez and Ricardo Bautista in the eighth to extend the lead.
Nick Banks then delivered a two-run double for Auburn (19-26) in the eighth to cut the margin to three, but Jackson's run-scoring single in the ninth and a subsequent double play ball finalized the scoring.
Doubledays starter McKenzie Mills held the Spikes to one run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings, but State College collected seven runs on eight hits against the Auburn bullpen.
A.J. Bogucki (0-4) took the loss after relieving Mills. Bogucki yielded three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over two innings. The right-hander has drawn the loss in each of his first four professional appearances, three of them against the Spikes.
The Spikes have now won their last eight series openers on the road this season. State College has outscored Auburn, 62-29, in the seven meetings between the two teams this year.
Thursday, the Spikes and Doubledays meet again at Falcon Park for the middle game of their three-game set. State College will send right-hander Bryan Dobzanski (3-4) to the hill for the 7:05 p.m. matchup. Auburn will respond with right-hander Weston Davis (2-2).
After the series in Auburn, the Spikes will visit the Vermont Lake Monsters for three games before heading home on Tuesday to start a stretch of six straight home games.
