Cyclones Struggles Continue, Blanked 2-0

BROOKLYN,NY - August 2, 2016 -For the second time in three games, the Cyclones were shutout as they fell to the Aberdeen IronBirds by the score of 2-0 at MCU Park on Tuesday afternoon. Brooklyn managed just seven hits in the three-game series with Aberdeen and has scored just two runs over their last four games.

The Cyclones had an early scoring opportunity to get on the scoreboard when Michael Paez worked a one-out walk before Desmond Lindsay laced a double into the right field corner. Chad Billingsley fielded the ball and fired it towards the infield, overthrowing 2B Alejandro Juvier, but 1B Collin Woody backed up the throw and relayed a perfect strike to the plate to nail Paez at home.

While Brooklyn failed to capitalize on their lone scoring chance, Aberdeen took full advantage of their opportunity in the top of the 2nd. Preston Palmeiro started the frame with a double and eventually found himself on third with two outs and Guillermo Salas at the plate. The IronBirds shortstop laid down a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line and beat out the throw from Blake Tiberi to plate the game's first run and give Aberdeen the 1-0 advantage.

That's how it would stay, as the Cyclones did not get another runner on base until Gene Cone worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth. But while the Brooklyn bats struggled, RHP Gabriel Llanes excelled on the mound for the Cyclones. The righthander became the first Cyclones pitcher this season to complete 8.0 innings on the mound, scattering five hits without a walk while striking out a pair. But despite an impressive effort, Llanes was the hard luck loser, dropping to 2-5 on the season.

The IronBirds tacked on some insurance runs in the ninth when RHP Ty Williams, making his first appearance on the mound since labrum surgery, threw nine pitches that resulted in two walks and a hit batter to load the bases. LHP Gabriel Feliz was summoned from the bullpen and allowed an RBI single to Preston Palmeiro that made it 2-0, but the southpaw was able to stop the bleeding there.

Brooklyn will look to rebound from the tough loss as they head to Hudson Valley to take on the first place Renegades. Harol Gonzalez (3-1) will make the start for Brooklyn. The Cyclones will return to MCU Park on Tuesday, August 9th for Joe Torre Bobblehead night and to open a six-game homestand.
