Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners rallied from both a three-run deficit in the ninth inning to tie the game and a two-run deficit in the 11th for a 7-6 walkoff victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at LeLecheur Park.
The Spinners scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first on a two-out Ryan Scott RBI single, but the Vermont combo of starter A.J. Puk and reliever Heath Bowers held Lowell without another hit over the next seven frames as the Lake Monsters built a 4-1 lead through eight innings. But Bowers gave up a single, double and Scott two-run double to start the ninth inning and cut the Vermont lead to 4-3. Yordy Alejo relieved Bowers and got a foul pop up for the first out of the ninth, but then gave up a game-tying RBI double to Carlos Tovar.
Vermont took the lead back in the 11th when with runners on first and second with two outs Spinners pitcher Jordan Weems uncorked a pitch into the dirt. With the runners trying to advance, catcher Nico Scoirtino's throw to second base sailed into centerfield allowing both runners to score and give the Lake Monsters a 6-4 lead. But the Spinners rallied again as they loaded the bases off Alejo in the bottom of the 11th on a Scott double, a walk and a Tovar bunt single.
After getting a short flyball to right for the first out, Alejo forced home a run with a walk to Tyler Hill (the league's leading hitter in a pinch-hitting spot). Dalton Sawyer came on in relief and got Steven Reveles to foul out for the second out, but Chris Madera grounded a double just past first baseman Miguel Guzman to score the tying and winning runs. It is just the second time in Vermont's 23-year history that the Lake Monsters have lost when leading by three or more runs after eight innings (led 9-5 in bottom of ninth on August 7, 2004 before Aberdeen tied game with four runs and won game in 11th 10-9).
Scott finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and three RBI, while Weems (1-0) earned the win despite allowing the two runs in the 11th. Nate Mondou was 3-for-5 for Vermont, collecting hits in his first three at bats including an RBI single in the fifth that gave the Lake Monsters a 3-1 lead. With the three hits, Mondou is now hitting .370 and extended his consecutive on base streak to 25 straight games. Luis Barrera also had three hits, including a double, to raise his average to .316 overall.
Tyler Ramirez smacked a solo homer in the ninth for his first professional home run, while Puk allowed one unearned run on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts in a season-high four innings for the first-round pick in his fifth professional start. Bowers took over for Puk to start the fifth and allowed just two walks and a hit batter with two strikeouts over his first four innings before giving up the three straight hits to open the ninth.
Vermont (19-26), which has lost three straight and nine of their last 11, will play at Lowell again on Thursday at 7:05 pm with 2016 second-round pick Logan Shore scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters in his professional debut, The three-game series then concludes on Friday before Vermont returns to Centennial Field for a three-game series against the State College Spikes starting on Saturday. -monsters- --001a1147ab207678b90539366f31
