
Scrappers Top Black Bears

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Morgantown, WV-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers battled both Mother Nature and the West Virginia Black Bears on Wednesday night. The Scrappers battled a steady rain nearly all game long as the held on to top the Black Bears, 4-3.
The Scrappers jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Nate Winfrey delivered an RBI single to score Mitch Longo. Alexis Pantoja followed with an RBI fielder's choice to drive in Logan Ice for the 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Krause led off the inning for West Virginia with a solo homerun to pull the Black Bears to within one run.
West Virginia would tie the game in the fourth inning. With two outs, Hunter Owen and Albert Baur would hit back to back doubles. Baur's double would drive in Owen for a 2-2 game.
The Scrappers took the lead right back in the top of the fifth inning. Winfrey walked and Pantoja singled to start the inning. A wild pitch would move both runners into scoring position. Gabriel Mejia then drove both in with a two run single to center for the 4-2 lead.
The Black Bears got a run on a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning for the final run of the game. They stranded the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Juan Hillman (3-1) earned the win with 5.0 innings of work. He allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits. Hillman walked one and struck out two. Henry Martinez (1) earned a hold in 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits. Martinez walked four and struck out one. Ryan Perez (2) picked up the save with 1.1 innings of work. He did not allow a hit or a run. Perez walked one.
The Scrappers (20-24) and Black Bears (20-25) will continue their series on Thursday night. First pitch from Morgantown is set for 7:05pm. Shane Bieber will get the start for the Scrappers. The Scrappers will return home on Tuesday night for a six game home stand.
