Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Pat Mahomes in an attempt to bolster the pitching staff for the second half. Mahomes was 22-9 in 38 starts for the Canaries over two seasons, before being traded to Joliet in exchange for All-Star outfielder Cory Harris this past off-season.

"While things didn't work out for Pat in Joliet or subsequently in Grand Prairie, I do think he has something he can bring to the table for us," said Canaries Manager Steve Shirley. "Pat was always a great leader both in our clubhouse and on the field, he is the type of pitcher that makes other people around him better, and I think he will be able to thrive in returning to a city and team that he had success with the last two seasons."

Mahomes led the Canaries in their journey to become 2008 American Association Champions. Mahomes started game one in each the North Division Playoff Series against the Sioux City Explorers and the American Association Championship Series against the Grand Prairie AirHogs. In winning both of those games, Mahomes became the first pitcher in club history to record two playoff wins. Mahomes also started the championship-clinching fourth game of the title series, although he received no decision in the game which the Canaries won in 12 innings.

This season with Grand Prairie, Mahomes went 1-6 with one save and a 6.44 ERA. Pat made eight starts and five relief appearances for the AirHogs, throwing 57.1 innings and allowing 43 runs, 41 earned, on 74 hits, while striking out 38.

The Canaries return home tonight at 7:05 p.m. for a series opener with the Sioux City Explorers. The game will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
