St. Paul Saints News Release
PENSACOLA, FL (July 17, 2009) - Whether it was the long bus ride from Fort Worth, the great pitching by Pensacola Pelicans starter Randy Beam or the continued struggles with the bats, the St. Paul Saints offense looked flat on Friday night losing 5-2 at Jim Spooner Field at Pelican Park.
The Saints made noise in the first inning, but were not heard from again. Alex Fonseca led off with a walk and Josh Alley singled to right. Fonseca, however, was thrown out at second when he took a wide turn towards third and right fielder Rafael Alvarez threw him out at second. With two outs Jake Butler singled to left and Brent Krause doubled both runners home to make it 2-0. The Saints would only collect two hits the rest of the game and never had another man past second base.
The Pelicans made it 2-1 in the third when Antoin Gray singled to center and moved to third on Francisco Leandro's single to right. A wild pitch scored Gray.
The Pelicans took the lead in the fifth as Chase Burch led off with a double to left-center. With one out Burch moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Guance. Alvarez then walked and scored on a double by Lester Contreras to make it 3-2, which chased Saints starter Mark Moriarty. Reliever Ryan Ariail gave up an RBI base hit to Adam Deleo to make it 4-2. Moriarty went 4.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking six and striking out three.
Pelicans starter Beam was impressive after the first inning giving up just an infield single to Andrew Schmiesing in the second and a lead off single to Jason Cooper in the sixth. He scattered two walks in the mix and went 8.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.
The same two teams meet Saturday night in the second game of the three game series at 6:05 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field at Pelican Park. The Saints send RHP Tom Buske (2-1, 3.00) to the mound against Pelicans LHP Jason Navarro (0-0, 5.25). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
