CANARIES SKID REACHES FIVE GAMES

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-7) lost their fifth consecutive game, falling 8-4 to the Sioux City Explorers (6-4) on Saturday night in front of 4,198 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Patrick Reilly went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the defeat.

The Canaries started the scoring in the third inning. The Birds loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Ryan Grant, and walks to Tim Hutting and Cory Harris. Beau Torbert came through with a bases loaded single to score Grant and give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. However, Torbert's hit would provide the Canaries only run of the inning.

Sioux City went ahead in the fourth. After Luis Figueroa reached base on an infield single, Jason Colson hit his second home run of the season. Colson's homer gave the Explorers a 2-1 lead.

The Birds tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Eveland reached on an infield single and got second base on an errant throw by Sioux City shortstop Nick McCoola. Eveland advanced to third on Ken Lup's groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Grant to even the score, 2-2.

The Canaries broke the tie in the fifth inning. J.D. Reininger walked and got into scoring position on a wild pitch. Reilly followed with a two-out single to bring home Reininger for a 3-2 lead.

Sioux City tied the game in the sixth. With two on and two out, Derek Schermerhorn hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Trevor Lawhorn. The error allowed James Boone to score, and knot the game, 3-3.

Each team scored once in the seventh. Dustin Jones walked, and with two outs Justin Nelson doubled to bring home Jones and put the Explorers ahead, 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Trevor Lawhron singled and scored on a double by Patrick Reilly to once again tie the game, 4-4.

Sioux City went ahead to stay in the eighth. Schermerhorn walked, stole second and scored on a Brett Mieras single to give the Explorers a 5-4 lead. Dustin Jones followed with a two-run homer to give the Explorers a 7-4 lead. An additional run in the ninth inning capped off the 8-4 win.

David Trahan (5-2) picked up the win in relief, throwing two innings and giving up one run on four hits. Pat Mahomes (1-7) suffered the loss in his first appearance for the Canaries.

The Birds and Explorers continue the three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's game will be the Canaries annual wooden bat giveaway presented by Schoeneman's Lumber.
