Kirsten, Cats drop Diablos 8-1

Joel Kirsten allowed just one unearned runs in eight innings of work as the Cats dropped El Paso 8-1 in front of 6,257 fans Friday night at LaGrave Field.

The win was the Cats' third straight as they pulled to within one game of the lead in the second-half South Division standings.

The Cats scored first in the third inning as Cameron Blair reached on a one-out single, went to third on a double by Michael Bell and scored on a passed ball.

Fort Worth added to runs to its lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Brian Fryer and a sacrifice fly by Blair as each collected his 28th run batted in of the season.

The Diablos scored their only run in the sixth inning as David Washington reached on a three-base error and scored on an RBI ground out by Kennard Bibbs.

The Cats broke the game open in the eighth inning. an RBI single by Fryer and an RBI double from Blair make it 5-1. John Allen smacked a three-run homer to left field, his eighth of the season for an 8-1 Fort Worth lead.

Kirsten struck out a season-high 10, walked one and permitted only two hits as he improved to 6-4 on the season. Kirsten at one point in the game struck out five consecutive hitters in the fourth and fifth innings. Scott Vander Weg worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the game.

Cardoza Tucker (0-4) took the loss as he gave up three runs, two earned on six hits in six innings of work.

Cats' left fielder Chuck Carter sustained an injury stepping back into second base in the fourth inning and had to leave the game. Matt Combs replaced Carter as a pinch runner and stayed in the game to play first as Allen moved to left. Carter's status is day-to-day.

The Cats and Diablos meet again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Matt Gibbs starts for the Cats and Josh Neitz will be on the hill for El Paso.
