Mahle Pitches Dragons Past Loons

Dayton, Ohio-Tyler Mahle struck out a career-high nine batters over seven shutout innings and the Dayton Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 3-1 on Monday night. A crowd of 8,675 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.

Mahle (3-3) retired the last 11 batters he faced over a tremendous performance. He walked only one and allowed three hits, all singles, and all in the first three innings.

The Dragons took the lead in the third inning when Jimmy Pickens singled to right, went to third on an error, and scored on Ronald Bueno's double to make it 1-0. In the Dayton fifth, Bueno reached on a bunt single and Luis Gonzalez singled to left. Brian O'Grady followed with a double to the right field corner, driving in both Bueno and Gonzalez to make it 3-0.

Great Lakes brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. Dragons reliever Brian Hunter retired the first two batters in the inning before allowing a double to Josmar Cordero and a run-scoring single to Alex Santana. But Hunter struck out Jacob Scavuzzo to end the game and earn his fifth save.

The Dragons collected seven hits. Bueno and O'Grady each had two. Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games, the longest by a Dragons player since Ryan Wright had a 17-game hitting streak in 2012. O'Grady's hitting streak advanced to 12 straight games.

The Dragons (21-17) began the day in a three-way tie for second place with Lake County and Lansing in the East Division. Lake County lost to Fort Wayne to fall a game behind the Dragons, while Lansing defeated South Bend to remain tied. The Dragons began the day two games behind first place Bowling Green, which played a late game on Monday in Kentucky.

The Dragons host the Loons in the second game of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Wyatt Strahan (3-2, 2.41) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Roberth Fernandez, who will be making his first appearance of the season.

Notes: Reds Hall-of-Fame shortstop Barry Larkin and former all-star outfielder Eric Davis worked as instructors during the game from the Dragons dugout. Larkin will be with the Dragons through Wednesday...Former Padres and Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers, now a Reds special assistant, was also in attendance...The Dragons improved their home record at Fifth Third Field to 11-5 on the year...The Dragons are 15-8 over their last 23 games overall...The Dragons are 13-2 when scoring the first run of the game (6-0 at home)...The Dragons are 16-5 this season in games in which they allow no unearned runs...The Dragons are 5-3 against the Loons this season. Between May 1 and May 21, the Dragons and Loons meet 11 times in a 20-game stretch.
