LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (21-17) had a season-high 16 hits to knock off the South Bend Cubs (18-20) in the opening game of a four-game set, 7-5, on Monday at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Left fielder D.J. Davis finished 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, the third time in Davis has had four hits in a game. Davis last had four hits in a game July 10, 2013 with the Bluefield Blue Jays.
Cubs starter Jeremy Null (Loss, 4-1) surrendered the most runs and hits he's given up in 2015 - five runs and 12 hits.
Shane Dawson (Win, 5-2) threw 5.1 innings of three-run ball, walking three and striking out a pair.
Jose Fernandez recorded the final three outs for his second save of the season.
Lansing compiled three hits in four separate innings, scoring in each. The Lugs had three hits and two runs in the opening frame. Leadoff batter Anthony Alford doubled and Richard Urena singled in Alford to score the game's first run. The third batter Rowdy Tellez advanced Urena to third on a ground out. Cleanup hitter Ryan McBroom doubled Lansing's advantage with a single to center to plate Urena.
With the score even at two in the bottom of the fourth, Lansing again had three hits in an inning to jump back ahead. Gunnar Heidt doubled in Justin Atkinson. Center fielder Anthony Alford blooped a single to short right field for an RBI single, bringing Heidt in.
Lansing and South Bend traded runs in the seventh and the eighth. Danny Jansen finished 2-for-4, including a two-RBI single in the seventh. After South Bend had two runs in the eighth, Colton Turner pitched Lansing out a one-out, bases-loaded jam. The reliever struck out David Bote and then forced Jesse Hodges into a groundout to end the threat.
