Great Lakes Loons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Success did not meet the Loons in Dayton as the Dragons topped Great Lakes 3-1 in the teams' first meeting of the season at the Dragons' ballpark.

Dragons' starter Tyler Mahle tossed seven shutout innings and allowed three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. At one point, Dayton retired 16 straight batters and the Loons did not register a hit from the third inning to the ninth.

Right-hander Kevin Guzman started for the Loons. In the third, Ronald Bueno doubled home an unearned run to stake Dayton to a 1-0 lead. Guzman later loaded the bases with one out, but pitched out of the jam to preserve the one-run deficit.

Guzman ran into trouble in the fifth as well. With one out, Bueno reached on a bunt down the first-base line. It was the first of three straight hits for the Dragons. The next batter, Luis Gonzalez, extended his hit streak to 13 straight with a single to put two on base, and lefty Brian O'Grady pushed a hit streak of his own to 12 with a ringing double that plated the pair and gave Dayton a 3-0 lead.

The Loons avoided their seventh shutout with a belated ninth-inning rally. Josmar Cordero doubled and Alex Santana singled him home to put the Loons on the board.

The rally ended there, however, as Jacob Scavuzzo struck out to end the game. With the loss, the Loons fall to 16-19 and 3-5 in the season series with Dayton.

The Loons' four-game road series with Dayton continues Tuesday with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Left-hander Roberth Fernandez starts for Great Lakes and makes his U.S. debut. Coverage starts at 6:30 on ESPN 100.9-FM.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
