Maduro's Career Comes Full Circle But Baysox Fall 4-1 Saturday Night

June 10, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Mets Beat Baysox 4-1 in Maduro's Final Hurrah Calvin Maduro's career began as a Baltimore Orioles farmhand and that is exactly where it ended on Saturday night in a 4-1 loss to the Mets during the Baysox 5th Annual Negro League Tribute night. The Baysox players wore replica Kansas City Monarchs jerseys during the game as a tribute to the Negro Leagues. Those jerseys were then auctioned off during the game with a portion of the proceeds to benefit former Negro League Players. Following the game, the winning bidders met the Baysox player wearing the jersey that they won in the auction and received the jersey right off the players back on the field following the game.

However, on the diamond, Binghamton would get the best of Maduro as they picked up four runs on three hits off the veteran right-hander and held the Baysox to just one run.

Unlike last night, Saturday's game did not see much offense. After Binghamton put up four in the 3rd inning, including a bases loaded double that cleared the bags, the Baysox could only muster one run in the bottom of the 5th.

Gera Alvarez would be the only member of the Baysox to score a run in the contest as he reached on a fielder's choice and later stole second base. With Alvarez standing at second and two outs, Jeff Fiorentino lined a pitch into center field and Alvarez rounded third and dove head first into home to cut the deficit to three.

However, the Mets pitching got the Baysox to hit the ball directly at their defense all night long. Despite the 4-1 loss, the 8,259 fans in attendance were treated to a spectacular fireworks show following the game.

Maduro, a native of Aruba, first pitched in Bowie during the 1996 season before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Maduro, who was knighted by the Queen of The Netherlands in 2003, played with the Orioles, Phillies and Yankees organizations in his 14-year career and had stints with both Baltimore and Philadelphia in the Major Leagues.

With his playing career behind him, Maduro will begin a coaching career as Aberdeen's pitching coach later this month.
