MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds used a strong pitching performance from starter Evan MacLane to beat Iowa 5-1 Friday night at AutoZone Park and move into first place in the American North division of the Pacific Coast League.
MacLane, in his Redbirds debut, twirled six strong innings to notch his first victory of the year. The lefty gave up one run on five hits and tied a Redbirds season-high with eight strikeouts. Matt Pagnozzi and Jon Jay each drove in runs in the rally. David Freese tacked on another run with his second home run in as many days in the sixth before the Redbirds put the game away with two more runs in the seventh. Donovan Solano went 2-for-3 to lead the Memphis offense. The Cubs lone run came in the fourth inning off of Bobby Scales home run to left field.
Iowa starter Jose Ascanio was pinned with the loss after giving up two runs on five hits over five innings.
