Portland Beavers News Release
RENO, Nev. - Rusty Ryal had two hits and scored on a bases-loaded walk in the 11th and Guillermo Reyes and former Beaver Luke Carlin each had three hits as the Reno Aces outlasted the Portland Beavers, 5-4, in 11 innings at Aces Ballpark Friday night.
The Aces (9-12) pounded out 15 hits on the night, including three each by Reyes and Carlin. First baseman Josh Whitesell got aboard in each of his six plate appearances, doubling twice and walking four times to set a new Aces franchise record.
Drew Macias doubled and homered for the Beavers (11-11), who also got solo home runs from Will Venable and Jose Lobaton.
Bobby Korecky (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for Reno to pick up his first win of the season.
Gabe DeHoyos (0-1), who entered the game having not allowed a run in his 12.2 innings pitched on the season, gave up four hits and two walks in one inning of work and walked pinch-hitter Agustin Murillo with the bases loaded in the 11th to take the loss.
The Beavers grabbed an early lead on Venable's first-inning homer and extended it to 2-0 with Lobaton's fifth-inning blast.
But the Aces, who stranded nine runners over the first four innings, finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Reno used doubles by Alex Romero, Whitesell and Ruben Gotay and a single by Luke Carlin to plate three runs and claim a 3-2 lead.
Macias wasted no time in erasing the Aces' lead, belting a home run to right on the second pitch of the sixth inning and knotting the game at three.
Reno regained their one-run lead in the seventh when Carlin doubled home Whitesell with a drive that bounced off the top of the wall in right-center field.
The Beavers touched up Jose Marte for his second blown save of the year in the ninth when pinch-hitter Kevin Howard legged out an infield single to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout. Emil Brown then tied the game at four, bringing home Howard with an RBI double to left.
Seth Etherton went seven strong innings for the Aces, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five, but also served up the three solo homers.
Beavers' starter Cesar Ramos allowed three runs over five innings despite giving up nine hits and five walks, but the lefty did not factor in the decision.
The Beavers and Aces meet again tomorrow afternoon in Reno at 1:05 p.m. (Pacific).
