Mack Jacks Charleston to 5-4 Win in 10 Innings

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - DeAngelo Mack crushed a solo home run in the top of the 10 th to propel the RiverDogs to a 5-4 triumph over the Lakewood BlueClaws in South Atlantic League action at FirstEnergy Park Wednesday evening.

The RiverDogs take the first two games of the series and have now won seven of their last eight road games in improving to 13-13, 44-51 overall, while Lakewood has lost four straight in falling to 15-10, 57-38 overall.

BlueClaws reliever Justin Beal (2-1) recorded the first two outs of the 10thbefore Mack came in and clouted his team-best 10 th home run of the year over the right-field wall to give Charleston a 5-4 lead.

Francisco Gil came on for the bottom half and allowed a two out single, but fanned Jonathan Villar for the fourth time in the contest to pick up his fifth save. Although Charleston had not played in an extra-inning game since June 2, the team improves to 6-2 in such games and has now won four consecutive one-run games.

Charleston batted around in the first against Lakewood's Brody Colvin, taking a 4-0 lead on four straight hits. Neil Medchill and Rob Lyerly each delivered RBI singles, while Kyle Higashioka stroked a two-run double to account for the offense.

Colvin, who possessed a league-best 1.59 ERA since May 13, pitched 5.0 full frames, giving up eight base hits in the no-decision, although he did not permit a run after the initial inning.

Jeremy Barnes and Anthony Hewitt hit consecutive singles to start the third against Charleston's Brett Marshall, and after a passed ball moved each runner up, Alan Schoenberger hit a sacrifice fly, and Jiwan James drove home a run with a groundout to the cut the deficit to 4-2.

Lakewood tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth on a Schoenberger RBI single and a James sacrifice fly.

Marshall hummed a 6.0 inning no-decision for Charleston, surrendering four runs on five hits with a walk and a season-best seven strikeouts.

Lakewood had a chance to walkoff in the ninth, loading the bases with one out against Kelvin Perez (4-5), but Barnes bounced into a 4-3 double play to send the affair to extras.

In his third relief outing of the year, Perez got his first victory since June 11, which was a 7.0 inning win over Hagerstown as a starter.

Medchill, Higashioka, and Slade Heathcott all had two hits for Charleston, which has 27 hits in two games this series.

The third game of this tilt is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston pitching southpaw Josh Romanski (5-2, 3.02 ERA) against Lakewood right-hander Trevor May (1-1, 5.06 ERA).
