Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns took an early lead against the Asheville Tourists on Wednesday, but could not hold on, losing 13-10.
Both teams scored single runs in the first inning, and the Suns took a seemingly-commanding lead in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Suns second baseman Jeff Kobernus hit a Grand Slam to left field, giving Hagerstown a 5-1 lead. The grand slam was the first of the season for Hagerstown, and the first home run of the year for Kobernus.
The lead was not to last, as Asheville responded with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning against Suns starter Paul Demny.
Hagerstown responded well, with two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk by DH Brett Newsome and an RBI ground out by center fielder Eury Perez, giving the Suns a 7-5 lead.
After the teams traded runs in the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth, Hagerstown extended their lead to 9-6 with a run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, catcher Sandy Leon doubled and two batters later Kobernus followed with a double of his own, driving in Leon.
From then on, it was all Asheville. The Tourists scored one run in the sixth and four in the seventh to give the home team an 11-9 lead. Even though the Suns rallied for a run in the eighth inning, it was not to be as Asheville got two runs on a two-run home run from first baseman Jared Clark in the eighth to take the 13-10 lead.
The Suns were retired in order in the ninth inning, the first time all game the Suns sent just three hitters to the plate.
Ben Graham (1-1) took the loss for the Suns after allowing four runs, three of them earned, in one and two-thirds innings of work.
Paul Bargas (4-4) earned the win for Asheville by tossing two innings and allowing just one run. Sheng-An Kuo got his 12th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
The Suns and Tourists will play the third game of their four-game series on Thursday starting at 7:05 PM. Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton is scheduled to appear for Asheville in a rehab start.
