Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Down 4-0 after two innings, the Kannapolis Intimidators did not allow any more runs in the remainder of the ballgame but couldn't muster enough offense to overcome that deficit as they fell in game two of a four game series by the score of 4-1 to the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field.
Pete Ruiz made his second start of the season against the Intimidators (10-16) and for the second time this season worked well. For the third time all year, Ruiz (6-7) went six innings, allowed just two hits and shut out the Intimidators.
Matt Hopps started the game and lasted just two innings, in the first, he allowed the first four to reach before a double play and a double helped score the second and third runs of the inning. In the second, the bases were loaded against Hopps (1-8) for the second time after a run scored, but he got another double play to end the scoring in his two innings at four runs. Ryan Kussmaul, in his debut with the organization, threw four scoreless allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and JR Ballinger went two scoreless in relief.
Down 4-0 in the seventh, the Intimidators had their best chance of the game against Armando Zerpa as Ian Gac and Nick Ciolli singled and Jose Vargas reached on an error to load the bases with no one out. However, Zerpa got Ryan Hamme to strike out, a ground ball RBI for Miguel Gonzalez and a groundout to short by Jake Oester saw just one run score, the lone run of the game.
Anatanaer Batista came on in the ninth inning for the Drive (17-9) and got his fifth save of the season as he allowed two singles with two down, but as the tying run at the plate, Daniel Wagner popped out to end the game.
The loss breaks the Intimidators three-game winning streak and sets the series even at 1-1. On Thursday, Cameron Bayne looks for his seventh win of the season and he will be opposed by Kendal Volz at 7:00 pm.
