MacInnes Backstops Saskatoon to Gutsy 3-2 in Lethbridge

Saskatoon Blades News Release

Lethbridge, AB - The Saskatoon Blades, backstopped by an outstanding showing from rookie netminder Koen MacInnes, claimed a late 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes in Lethbridge on Tuesday night.

MacInnes, starting his first Western Hockey League game, made 36 saves on 38 shots faced - five of which came off the stick of 2019 7th overall NHL Draft pick Dylan Cozens. MacInnes' .947 SVS% held Lethbridge at bay for much of the night, buying valuable time for Saskatoon's skaters to decipher the goaltender at the opposite end of the ice.

For only the second time this season, Saskatoon opened the scoring, courtesy of an early Zach Huber goal - his first of the season. Huber shot the puck in far side after collecting the puck off of a rebound created by Riley McKay and Aiden De La Gorgendiere.

The Hurricanes would score the next two goals of the game, both times on the power play, to have a 2-1 lead early in the third period.

With another one-goal loss looming large for Saskatoon, two goals in quick succession within the final 3:01 minutes of regulation for the visitors turned the tables and the Hurricanes suddenly found themselves down 3-2.

The boys in Blue & Gold struck through 16-year-old rookie Jayden Wiens who, scoring his first career WHL goal, threw the puck to the front of the net where it bounced off Lethbridge's netminder and in. Jerzy Orchard earned his first assist of the season on the play, which was also his first assist as a Saskatoon Blade.

Scott Walford then finished the comeback, sniping the biscuit into the top right corner of the net after being fed the puck by Kyle Crnkovic via Nolan Kneen. Lethbridge were unable to recover in the short amount of time left after Walford's goal and the Blades skated off victors.

MacInnes & Walford were named with 1st & 3rd Star Honours respectively at the conclusion of the match.

The Blades are in action again on Friday night, October 4th, at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert as they play their third game against the Raiders of the season.

Saskatoon will then return to action at home on Sunday, October 6th, as they host the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 4pm matinee featuring a post-game-skate with the team.
