Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (2-2-0-0) picked up their second overtime win in as many tries thanks to Conner Horning's winner against the Edmonton Oil Kings (2-1-2-0) Wednesday night.
Ben King opened up the scoring, taking a nice backhand pass from Joona Kiviniemi while wide open on Todd Scott's glove slide and shovelled in his first of the season.
Just 49 seconds later, Kiviniemi picked up a loose puck and flew down the left wing before firing a wrist shot under the blocker of Scott to boost the Broncos lead to 2-0.
Late in the period, Vladimir Alistrov found a loose puck in front of Isaac Poulter and scored his second of the year to cut the Broncos lead to 2-1 heading into the intermission.
Just 1:25 into the second period, Carter Souch tied the game with his first of two on the the night. The game wouldn't stay tied for long however, as Tyler Smithies blocked a clearing attempt and found Brecon Wood in front of the net.
Wood then faked to his forehand before pulling the puck to his backhand, and sliding it past a down-and-out Scott to restore Swift Current's lead.
The Oil Kings answered back before the period was up, capitalizing on a tough turnover by the Broncos. Kasper Puutio was on his own blue line as the last man back, and hit a rut in the ice.
That allowed Souch to pick up the loose puck and skate in on Poulter, faking a shot before sending it past his blocker to tie the game at three.
After a late penalty kill for Swift Current, the game went to overtime, setting the stage for Horning's winner.
He skated up the middle of the neutral zone and into the Edmonton end before leaning into a wrist shot, beating Scott on the blocker side for his first of the season to end the game.
The win pushed the Broncos back to .500 and gives them a boost heading into Friday's game against the Red Deer Rebels (2-3-0-0).
Announced attendance was 1,818.
